Swinging Sixties was the theme for the two Wombourne Wives meetings in May. Our May 10th meeting was an illustrated talk entitled ‘The Swinging Sixties’ by Ray Sturdy, who took us back to our youth – flares, mini skirts, Twiggy, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Flower Power , James Bond, John Kennedy’s assassination, Luther King , The first man on the moon and not forgetting England winning the 1966 World Cup, to name a just of the few of the events defining Sixties decade!
Ruth Lowe (dressed in Mary Quant style patent cap, black and white block coloured mini dress and the famous knee length white parent boots) enthralled us with her talk about ’ Mary Quant’ We found out about Mary’s youth and how her early fashion years influenced fashion trends. She introduced the ‘Mod and Chelsea Era’ the miniskirt and hotpants, detachable collars for dresses, knee length patent boots, the beret, patent caps and her signature black and white block coloured mini dresses and not forgetting her paintbox makeup range. We handled many of her clothes, jackets, smocks, skirts and ribbed jumpers. What memories … so much to reminisce about with each other. A wonderful evening which we all enjoyed.
