Mulled Wine and Mince pies – Christmas Traditions
Our last speaker for 2017 was wives ‘ member Chris Welch. We were entertained to a light-hearted, informative evening linked to Christmas traditions of the past and more.( Even Ikea got a mention!!!!!)
We found out how the Winter Solstice influenced the Nativity date of December 25th, and how the origins and various traditions associated to St Nicholas and his alias’s such as Father Christmas and Santa Claus began. Christmas trees and Christmas cards were not going to be forgotten. What macabre Christmas cards the Victorians sent, and how cards have changed over time from very intricate to very minimalistic! Every taste is now catered for. Indeed we can even substitute the traditional card greetings for the click and send emails!!! What choice. Which do you choose?
The evening ended with the Christmas tradition of mulled wine and mince pies. We all participated. Well tradition says never refuse the first mince pie of the season so it would be rude not to wouldn’t it! The mulled wine just warned off the cold of the evening weather.
The wives group wish everyone a Happy Christmas and New Year.
